Safely Biking to Better Health
By Donna Stark
Many people have pulled their bikes out of the garage and taken to the roads in an effort to improve their physical health and fitness, but that's not all they are improving. Cycling has been shown to enhance mental and emotional health too! Sound too good to be true? Well, why don't you give it a try? With just 30 minutes of riding every day, you will be able to change the course of your overall well-being. But don't jump into it just yet! Take a look at the following tips and suggestions from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic first.
Perfect Fit
If you aren't sure how to fit your bike to your body, ask a professional at any of your local bike shops for help. You will want to make sure your seat and handlebars are at the proper height, and that the bike is in perfect working order. And while you are adjusting the fit of your bike, don't forget to make sure your helmet is perfectly fitted too!
Proper Form
There is no point in riding your bike for improved health and fitness if you aren't going to be safe about it. Proper form and posture are key to reducing the risk of damage and injury to your body. Here's how you can maintain both during your rides.
- Hold onto the handlebars with both hands
- Keep your elbows bent and your wrists level
- Maintain a neutral position for your back and neck
- Relax your shoulders
- Keep your knees positioned over your feet (don't send them out to your sides)
Safe Route
Of course, if you are riding a stationary bike you don't have to worry about planning a safe route, but if you are heading outdoors, this should be at the top of your safety list. Stick to the roads that have clearly marked bike lanes or head out to the designated bicycle trails around your local area. Make sure you have the physical capability to ride on the path you choose and that someone knows where you are headed if you are riding alone.
Prepared Body
Before you head out for your ride, warm up with some stretches and light movements. Start slowly and gradually build up your speed and intensity. If you are going for an especially long ride, eat a healthy snack before you leave and be sure to pack plenty of water. There is nothing worse than running out of fuel when you are miles from home.
Biking to Better Health
With the right safety precautions, cycling can be a great way to stay physically active and improve your overall health and wellness. So, go ahead! Pull your bike out of the garage, dust it off, and join all the others. You won't regret doing so!
