Brace for the Cold With These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

The winter months bring a time of cheer with the various holidays to celebrate. They also bring a time of feeling cold. While a bit of cold won't do any harm, frequent cold days can have a negative effect on your body. Brace for the cold with these tips to get a better handle on the way the weather impacts you.

Dress in Layers

Your first instinct might be to put on one of the thickest layers you have and wear only that. It may protect you from the cold, but it won't continue to do you body good if the weather warms up. Dressing in layers is the better option. Your body will be protected from the weather yet you will be able to take something off if it warms up later in the day and you start to feel overheated.

Rev Up Your Metabolism

It might be surprising to hear, but the foods you eat can help keep your body warm. Use the right foods to rev up your metabolism. Your body gets heated slightly as the metabolism works. Healthy fats work well for this. Spicy foods, soups, and chili are also terrific winter eats.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol can make you feel warm internally. Many think that this is a good thing for the winter months. This is actually bad for your body. You may find yourself sweating when drinking alcohol which will lower your body's core temperature when you're out in the elements. Water is always the best drink for your health.

Protect Your Fingers, Toes, Lobes, and Nose

The body works overtime to protect your internal organs from freezing temperatures. Your head is also one of the first to be kept warm. This leaves some of your extremities, such as your fingers, toes, ear lobes, and nose from getting the heat they need. You need to use extra protection for these areas of your body. Wear socks and boots. Put on a pair of gloves. Wear a heat or ear muffs. Place a scarf over the lower half of your face.

Cold weather can leave the body feeling sore, the immune system out of whack, and your mood low. Consider some tips when out in the cold so your body is as protected as possible. You can experience a better winter if you use some prevention methods.
