Why You Need a Mental Health Day

By Brandi Goodman

Mental health matters, yet so many people put it on the back-burner and keep pushing themselves to get through their work and home life tasks. When your head isn't in it and you truly need a break, it's time to take a mental health day.

Reduces Stress

You can feel incredibly stressed and overwhelmed when you have so much on your plate yet so little mental capacity to handle it all. Take a day away to step back and forget about all you have to do for a while. Enjoy some time to yourself so you can come back the next day less stressed, recharged, and ready to take it all on.

Allows Your Mind to Rest

Some days, your mind may feel like it's constantly racing with worries. Give your mind a break and allow it the time it needs to rest and recharge. You'll be better able to concentrate, focus, and keep a clear head if it isn't clouded with negative energy and weariness. Take a full day to relax, watch a show, head to the beach, read, or do whatever it is that puts your mind at ease. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, too.

Can Reconnect You to What's Important

Perhaps you've been spending so much time staying busy that you haven't had any moments left to enjoy the things and the people that are most important to you. Your mental health day can be spent reconnecting to what's important in your life. Either enjoy some of your favorite hobbies alone, spend time with your pet, or spend time with friends and family whom you've been missing lately.

Tip -- Schedule It in Advance!

Just a tip, be sure to schedule this mental health day in advance. If you wait to take it until you've exploded and can't take all the stresses of life anymore, it can bring a lot of guilt, irritability, and even more stress. Maybe it arrives at a terrible time when you have a project due at work or an important home task to finish. Schedule your mental health day a few days before a deadline or in advance of when you know things might become too overwhelming. It can help put your mind at ease and get your brain under control so you're rested and able to take on what's to come.

Take a mental health day when you need it. It can help you to recharge and be better prepared to handle all you have to accomplish in the weeks to come. Even a half-day away from work can be a huge relief and allow you the time to yourself you need to unwind, relax, and improve your mental capacity for everything going on in your life.
