How to Use an Exercise Machine Safely

If you’re feeling pumped and ready to try something new at the gym, or you decided to use your home exercise machine for more than just a clothing rack, then good for you! Just remember that the proper use of exercise machines such as ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bikes is really important to your overall health and wellness. If you take the appropriate precautions, then you can get a great cardio workout that is kind to your joints and your spine. Here are a few tips to get you started!
Adjust the Machine Properly
Exercise machines can be adjusted to fit your size and also to work you out at the appropriate fitness level. The instructions that come with the machine will clearly explain how to do this, so don’t just throw them aside and jump on. You need to read through the manual and figure out how to effectively adjust it for you, which will result in a better workout with less of a chance of injury.
If you’re at the gym, ask an employee how to adjust the machine to fit you and program it for your fitness level. They know how every machine in the gym works, so don’t be shy. That’s what they’re being paid for!
Prepare Your Body
You shouldn’t just jump on the machine and start working out. Some machines have a cooldown and warmup feature as a part of the program. You can follow those to slowly ease into the exercise and warm up your muscles. But, if the machine you’re using doesn’t have that feature, then doing some stretches and pumping a little blood into your muscles before you start is a great idea, as is stretching when you’re done.
Stay Hydrated
No matter where you’re exercising, it’s always a good idea to have a bottle of water on hand to keep you hydrated as you exercise. Take sips when you can to ensure that you don’t lose too much water as you sweat.
Wear the Right Gear
You need clothes that will allow you to move freely, so make sure you’re wearing workout gear that isn’t too tight and has some give to it. Also, make sure the shoes you’re wearing are appropriate. Proper footwear for what you’re doing is important to avoid injury and keep you healthy as you exercise.
