Your Chiropractor Suggests You Keep Moving!

By Stephen R. Farris

When it comes to back pain, most folks find it painful to do any type of exercise. Usually, relief comes from lying down and not moving around. This means that back pain sufferers might opt to just lie around all day. Unfortunately, this is probably one of the worst things to do for back pain.

The best thing for your back pain is to get up and do some exercise. Keep moving! However, there are some things you should and shouldn't do.

  • Don't overdo it
  • Know your limitations
  • Keep it simple
  • Low-impact is the best
  • Stay hydrated

When you think about exercise, you probably think you need to hit the gym and use weights. Nothing could be further from the truth, especially when talking about exercise for back pain. There are plenty of low-impact exercises you can do, without the use of heavy weights or machines. For instance, you can take up yoga or tai chi, and you can perform these exercises in the comfort of your home.

Yoga and tai chi both use low-impact movements and encourage the practice of breathing techniques. While both have advanced movements, you can simply start with some of the basics. Just don't overdo it and know when to stop to avoid further pain or injury.

Reiterating from earlier, the point is to keep moving.

If yoga or tai chi seems too difficult due to the type of back pain you're feeling, then try doing something simple like stretching. There are plenty of gentle stretching exercises you can do. If you're not familiar with which stretching exercises to do, there are plenty of videos to help you learn available for free on the internet.

Most of the stretching videos will demonstrate proper technique, to help you avoid further injury.

If you have questions about exercise for your back pain, consult with your local chiropractor to hear some of the tips and suggestions they may have to help you keep moving.

The bottom line is to do some type of exercise to keep you moving and not sitting all the time, and to help you become stronger in your core area and more free from pain. It'll make life more enjoyable so it doesn't just pass you by.
