How to Have a Peaceful Winter Slumber

By Brandi Goodman

You may find it difficult to achieve proper rest in the winter. The cold months can make it very tough to fall asleep at night. With some tips in mind, you can have an easier time earning a peaceful winter slumber that gives you the energy you need to make it through these cold days.

Set the Room Temperature Right

Too many people turn up the thermostat in the winter thinking making it warm will help them sleep. It's easy to overheat, though. Having your room temperature too high can be just as detrimental to your sleep cycle. Instead, keep your room temperature between 62 and 68 degrees for the best sleep.

Avoid Nighttime Snacking

Snacking at night can be a cause for concern. Eat too much, and your stomach can feel full and bloated. It will be difficult for your body to digest everything, and cause some discomfort. It's not easy to sleep when your stomach is aching. Avoid nighttime snacking and even heavy meals at dinnertime so you're better able to fall asleep come bedtime.

Get Plenty of Daylight

The winter season brings with it more dark hours. The sun sets very early on in the evening, leaving you in the dark for several hours before bed. If you don't get outside during the day and soak up the daylight, this can spell trouble for your sleep routine.

Use a Humidifier

Winter air can be dry and harsh.  You should use a humidifier to help keep the air moist and make it easier to breathe. Dry air can quickly cause your mouth to dry out, making you cough. You'll most likely need a drink of water to help. With the humidifier in use, you shouldn't have this problem and can rest easier.

Prevent Cold and Flu Symptoms

Both the common cold and the flu are more likely to pop up during the winter months when it's cold. Do all you can to prevent cold and flu symptoms so these illnesses do not prevent you from getting adequate rest. No one likes to be up all night coughing and blowing their forever-running nose. Wash your hands frequently, get your vaccinations, stay away from others who are sick, and take vitamins for the best prevention.

Sleep is necessary for good health. Don't let the wintertime stop you from achieving the adequate rest you need and deserve. Keep these tips in mind and do what you can to fall asleep easier on any cold night.
