Easy Ways to Make Your Diet Healthier
By Sara Butler
Most people know that eating a healthy, balanced diet has many benefits to health such as reducing the chances of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The problem is, making healthy changes to your diet can be a bit overwhelming. So instead of making huge sweeping changes all at once, try making a few small ones that can make your diet just a little healthier.
Eat More Slowly
How fast you eat influences how much you eat and how much you eat influences how healthy you are. How full you get when you eat is controlled by hormones that send signals to your brain when you're hungry and signals when you're full. If you eat too fast, then it's easy to overeat.
It takes about 20 minutes after you begin eating for your body to signal to your brain that you're full. That's why eating slowly and mindfully can have such a big impact on how much you eat and reduce the number of calories you consume overall.
The solution is simple: chew more, eat slower, and you can reduce your risk of eating too much at each meal.
Make a List
Channel your inner Santa when you go to the grocery store by making a list -- maybe even check it twice. That can make the difference between a naughty shopping trip and a good one -- health-wise, anyway.
Sit down before you leave for the store and make a list of the things you need to buy. Also, consider having a small snack before you go so you don't shop hungry. Shopping hungry can make your impulse buys a big problem!
Stick to your list and stock up on the healthy items you have written down. You'll have healthier foods to munch on throughout the week and probably a little bit more money, too!
Drink Water
Water is really important for your overall health. That's because every single cell in your body needs water to function at its best. Plus, drinking water helps to control your appetite and increase how effectively your body burns calories throughout the day.
That means you should opt for water over any other beverage, including sodas and fancy coffee drinks. This can help you reduce your overall sugar intake, which is never a bad thing for your health!
Being healthy doesn't mean you need to make sweeping, drastic changes. A few small things can bring you big results!
