Surprise! These Foods Are Hiding Sugar

By Sara Butler

Most people are aware of the fact that added sugar in the diet isn't good for overall health and wellness. Added sugar is easy to spot in many places, such as soda and cake, but there are many products you can buy that have sugar in them that may take you by surprise.

To help you control your sugar intake, here are some of the most surprising foods that have sugar added to them.

How Much Sugar Should You Eat?

Americans eat a lot of sugar. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that Americans eat about 17 teaspoons of sugar on average per day. That's way too much. Men should only be having about nine teaspoons per day while women should have only about six teaspoons. That's why finding sugar hidden in food is a big deal -- you could be getting a lot more than what you bargained for.

Spaghetti Sauce

Spaghetti sauce has all kinds of ingredients that are good for you with one ingredient that isn't -- sugar. Many mass-produced pasta sauces made from tomatoes have added sugars. That's why it's very important to look at the nutrition label to try and find one that is low in added sugars. If you can find a sauce that doesn't have any artificial or natural sweeteners added, then you should be good to go.

Yogurt

Yogurt is, in general, very good for you. It can be a great source of protein and other important nutrients. But flavored yogurts also have a lot of added sugars. That's why when you're shopping for yogurt, you should choose a brand that has less than 10 grams of added sugar per service.

Remember, yogurt already has natural sugars in it, it's the added sugars you want to avoid. It's always a safe bet to go with plain yogurt and simply add in your own toppings to make it a bit sweeter, such as berries.

Ketchup

Condiments like ketchup are actually a big source of added sugar. Putting just a tablespoon of ketchup on your plate can add one teaspoon of sugar to your daily intake. That's why you should choose ketchup that is low in added sugars on the ingredient list.

Kombucha

Kombucha has a reputation as a healthy drink, but you really have to be careful because it can also sneak in some added sugar.

The process by which kombucha is made requires sugar and a lot of brands on the market tend to add too much. Always look at the nutrition label and choose a brand that has 10 grams or less of sugar per serving.

Sugar is everywhere. Be careful how much you get!
