Posture Tips for Every Person

By Genevieve Cunningham

Good posture is essential to our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It’s amazing how much good posture -- or bad posture -- can change the way that we feel. And yet, so many of us struggle with this basic principle. Good posture should be easy, right? Then why is it so hard? If you struggle with posture, but would like to take it in a better direction, take a look at these helpful tips.

Be Aware

One of the hardest parts about beating bad posture is recognizing it. Sure, we notice that person walking down the street with their shoulders hunched over and their nose in their phone. But have you ever evaluated your own posture? Might you look like this to the stranger’s eye? Look at pictures of good posture, and then look at your own posture in the mirror. Do you notice any glaring similarities or differences? Now take that mental note with you everywhere. When you’re standing in line, do a quick posture check. When you’re driving, check your upper back and shoulders. Becoming aware of our own stance is one of the biggest steps in making a significant change.

Make Deep Breathing a Habit

Deep breathing, as in breathing that comes from way down deep in your diaphragm, requires you to stand up straight and flatten your stomach. If you don’t do this, you won’t be able to pull in the air required for a deep breath. Start the practice of deep breathing, even just once or twice a day, and then gradually add on to the amount of time spent on these deep and calming breaths. This will help you become more aware, and will trigger you to check your posture every time you reach for that deep breath.

Get Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care can be good for so many aspects of your health, and posture is no exception. Chiropractors focus on the health of the spine. They correct any misalignments of the vertebrae of the spine that may be present. This alleviates tension and pressure that build along the spine which, in turn, relieves pain. And the less pain you’re in, the easier it is to stand up straight and feel good about it. They may also give you tips for how to improve your posture every day. Exercises to perform, certain positions to avoid, and tips for being aware may be part of their valuable advice. If you want to improve your overall health, posture included, a chiropractor is a great place to begin.
