The Tough But True Secrets to Getting Fit

By Genevieve Cunningham

Getting fit is a tough task. If it was easy, everyone would be walking around with low body fat and a six pack. But that’s not happening because losing weight and building a body to be proud of is hard work. But why is it so hard? While part of the difficulty is the actual mechanics of weight loss (shrinking fat cells and building muscle), it’s also hard because sticking to the plan requires dedication and commitment that many just aren’t ready to give. While we often walk around saying that we don’t know how to lose weight, the harsh truth is that we often know … but don’t want to follow through. If you’re ready to work hard and finally get fit, take a look at these hard but true tips to incorporate today.

That Cookie Matters

No one really wants to hear it, but every calorie matters. In order to lose fat, you have to burn more calories than you consume. If you’re constantly overeating, you’ll never create a great enough deficit to make weight loss, and therefore that sculpted look, happen. Count the cookie calories. Count that extra helping of potatoes. Everything that goes into your mouth has to be counted toward your total calorie consumption. If you’re not doing so, getting a handle on your calories is a great place to start.

Consistency is Huge

The single most important part of losing weight and getting fit is consistency. You have to do the important things -- eat well, exercise, sleep -- day in and day out. You have to keep going when it’s hard, when it’s easy, and when you’re absolutely sick of doing the same old things. This is where most people go wrong. They do the right things for a while, but just when change is about to happen, they give up. If you really want to see significant change in your body and health, be consistent without fail.

Your Habits Must Change

Getting fit isn’t about a diet that you follow for three weeks. It’s not about a 90-day workout program. If you’re not changing your habits, you’re not going to succeed; it’s really that simple. Real health happens when you change the little things that you do every day. When you eat the right foods because that’s who you are and that’s the kind of life you lead. When you exercise because being active isn’t an option in your life. When you get adequate sleep every single night. When you finally change your bad habits into good ones, the positive changes to your health will happen faster than you realize.

If you really want to get fit, you have to be willing to work hard. Really hard. You can’t resist change and give into lazy tendencies and expect your body to respond. Make sure that you’ve taken these hard truths to heart. With some persistence and plenty of patience, you’ll be reaching your goals and enjoying better health before you know it.
