Healthy Habits to Help Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

By Virginia Laird

With the holiday season at its peak, it can be difficult to get excited about weight loss and diets. Worrying about these things can put a damper on the fun of attending holiday parties and family gatherings. While no one advocates to gain weight, many pack on the pounds during the holiday season. Seriously, can you blame anyone for indulging in the treats and goodies which are ever present this time of year. Research suggests there are a few things that can make healthy habits to help reduce your chances of falling victim to holiday weight gain, including:

  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Keep a food journal
  • Know the portion size

Getting Plenty of Sleep Can Help

Sleep plays a major role in the health of the body. Without the proper amount of sleep it can be difficult for the functions of the body to work. Trying to lose weight is very much affected by the amount of sleep a person gets. The body has a difficult time processing the demands being made on it without the sleep it needs to repair itself. The national sleep foundation recommends adults should get a minimum of at least six hours of sleep each night.

Keep a Food Journal

Keeping a food journal is another way to help prevent holiday weight gain as you make the rounds of holiday gatherings and parties. Dieticians suggest those who keep a food journal are far less likely to overeat than those who do not. Journaling can help shine the light on what is being consumed. The only rule to this technique is to write everything down. This includes any tastes or small bites of food which you may think is not worth the time. When food journaling, everything counts.

Know the Portion Size

Portion size can vary drastically from dish to dish. It is best to familiarize yourself with a wide variety of holiday treats and their average portion size. Taking the time to do this is one of the best things you can do to help prevent eating far too much of your favorite treat.

Adding these healthy habits to your lifestyle can improve your health and help you avoid an expanding waistline. Throw a small notepad in your purse so you can keep track of your food while at your party and enjoy yourself. Hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season!
