Does Your Purse Cause You Pain?

By Virginia Laird

Purses (and bags) can be a necessary evil. It is nearly impossible for a person to go without having a bag to carry all of his or her belongings. A purse can also serve as part of the outfit, completing the ensemble. However, purses (and bags) can be heavy, causing a great deal of strain and pain on the spine. Chiropractors take note of the spine of each person who comes through the office door. There is no surprise that even they have a few suggestions when it comes to purses.

Don't Wear It On Your Shoulder

Slinging a purse over the shoulder can seem like the best way to carry it. However, chiropractors suggest this can do a great deal of harm to the spine. The weight of the purse can shift the spine, causing restriction. This can lead to the many functions of the body being slowed down as well. Instead, it is suggested to carry a purse (or bag) in the hand. This can keep the load from tugging directly at the spine. Next time you are out and about, put this trick to the test to reduce your back pain.

Try to Keep Your Purse Light

The very best advice, according to chiropractors, is to keep the purse light. This may mean a person should invest in a smaller purse. It could mean a person should try to empty the purse (or bag) daily, eliminating the unnecessary items. Whatever it may be for you, it is imperative to the health of the spine to lighten the load. Heavy loads are very taxing on the back. Toting around a heavy purse for a long time can cause a great deal of pain. This can eventually lead to serious damage in the back and neck.

Alternate Sides When Carrying the Purse for A Long Time

Most people have a dominant side of the body. This can be true for the side a person may choose to carry a bag. However, it is important to alternate between both sides of the body. Chiropractors suggest this can help reduce the tension that can build in the back and neck. This is one tip that is sure to help keep pain at bay.
