How to Stay Fit During the Holidays

By Alexis Mills

The holidays are my favorite time of year for many reasons, such as tradition, family time, pretty lights and decorations, giving gifts, and yummy treats. I'm sure many of us feel like the holidays are full of unhealthy temptations that can steer us far from our fitness goals. Don't fret, we can all fully enjoy the holiday season while remaining fit and healthy.

  • Balance holiday drinks with water - Whether it be peppermint hot chocolate, wine or holiday cocktails, it is so important to remember to also be drinking water regularly throughout the day. If you know ahead of time you will be going to a holiday party with extra treats, prepare ahead of time by drinking more water than normal.
  • Eat treats in moderation - Everyone has heard the wise saying "everything in moderation." That applies to treats too! You don't have to deprive yourself to stay fit, but don't overdo it; enjoy them in moderation.
  • Take time to rest - Though the holidays are a fun time of the year, they can be exhausting and draining. From shopping through crowds, having family visit, hosting dinners, and attending parties, give yourself time to relax and unwind. Nights in with Christmas movies is a great way to still be in the holiday spirit while getting much needed rest.
  • Make exercise a priority - OK, I know I just said to take time to rest, but exercise is just as important. Find time to fit in exercise between cozy time by the fire and running errands. It can even be an at-home yoga practice to keep you mindful and warm by the fire. It's easy to make excuses this time of year to skip out on exercise, but you will be happy that you didn't.
  • Have a plan and set a goal - If you are worried you won't make the time for exercise, set a written, realistic plan for yourself and stick to it. Put it in your planner, set a time in your schedule, put reminders on your phone - do what it takes to make sure you stick to it.
  • Don't stress yourself out and be kind to yourself - Self-care is just as important as getting everything prepared for the holidays. Take care of yourself physically and mentally and stay focused on what is truly important to you this holiday season.
