3 Nighttime Activities That Help You Sleep
By Genevieve Cunningham
Sleep is so good. When we get a good night's rest, we feel so refreshed, so satisfied. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people simply aren't getting a good night's sleep. Either we can't fall asleep to begin with, or we toss and turn and can't stay asleep. It's frustrating, and even worse, it's bad for our health. So what can we do? While there's no surefire way to improve your sleep, there are some things you can do at night to improve your chances. If you need better sleep in your life, take a look at these three activities to start now.
Reading
Reading can be an incredibly calming activity. Why? Because it allows your brain to think and get involved with something low stress. It's much like getting lost in a movie or TV show, but you won't have to deal with the lights of the screen. The key is to get a book that you enjoy. If you don't like nonfiction, don't read it. If you like mysteries, go for it. Read whatever helps you relax, and it might be easier to put it aside and fall asleep.
Yoga
Yoga is both challenging and relaxing. If you're doing it for sleep, find a video or routine that promotes sleep. These yoga routines will probably be slower, and they may include deep stretches of big muscle groups. Do this about an hour before bed, and then spend some time in a hot shower and relaxing. The yoga might be just what you need to relax your body, and it might be easier to fall asleep when it's time.
Rituals
Rituals are good for us. A bedtime ritual gives our brain a chance to really relax and wind down. Your bedtime ritual might include a little exercise, a TV show, some reading, and a good book. Or it might be your shower routine, a good stretch, and some soft music. Do whatever makes you feel good, and over time, your body and mind will come to expect the routine, and they'll begin to wind down during the process for better sleep overall.
There are ways to improve sleep that don't have you reaching for a pill or doing anything drastic. Use these tips to improve your sleep, and you may find your quality of sleep and life improve like never before.
