Running for Health: Should You Try It?

Running can be such a great activity for your health. Many people pick up running as a hobby or as their main source of exercise. And when it comes to getting fit, running can definitely work. But there is a large group of people who absolutely detest running. They don't like it -- and yet they feel pressured to take a jog sometimes. Why? Because it's supposed to be the ultimate exercise, right? It's supposed to whip us into shape for good. So what's the deal? Should you suck it up and try running? Or can you skip it? If you're debating whether or not to add jogging into your life, take a look at some reasons to run, some reasons to skip it, and how to make your final decision.

Reasons to Try It

If you're seriously considering running, here are some good reasons to go ahead and make the leap. 

  • Stamina - Running is great for improving stamina. If you want more energy and the ability to go longer without losing breath or tiring out, running may be just what you need in your regular routine. 

  • Weight loss - Running can definitely help you lose weight. It's a calorie-burner, and burning calories is the key to losing weight long-term. Just don't expect to lose all of your weight at one time. It takes time! So stick with the running habit to see this benefit. 

  • Enjoyment - If you like running, do it! You don't have to have any particular reason for doing something you love -- especially when that thing only benefits your health in the long run.

Reasons to Skip It

If you're leaning toward skipping the run, there are some good reasons to do so. A few reasons why you should avoid running might include:

  • Injury - An injured person really shouldn't run. Why? Because running is actually tough on the body -- especially on the joints. If you're in pain or recovering, skip the run and go for a walk instead. 

  • Cure-all - Some people start running because they think it will fix all of their health problems. If this is your mindset, you should either skip running or change your perspective. Running is good and can improve your health, but it's not a cure-all, and you'll still need to make other lifestyle changes as well. 

  • You don't like it - If you don't like it, don't do it. There are so many different ways to work out; why waste your time and energy on something you don't like? Find something you enjoy instead and leave the running behind. 

Running can be a great way to get fit, boost stamina, build muscles, and feel better about yourself. It's truly an effective exercise. But it's not the only one! Make sure you're moving your body and exercising daily, and you'll gain big benefits to your health. Run, walk, jog -- just get moving and feel your best right now.
