Give Your Workout Motivation a Boost!

By Sara Butler

For a lot of people, simply getting to the gym is the toughest part of any workout. Life gets busy, and when you feel overwhelmed by other things going on in your life, the last thing you want to do is a workout. So, how do you find the motivation to get it done? The key is to building habits that will help you to climb any mountain (or do mountain climbers!) on your fitness journey. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated to workout.

Scale Down Your Commitments

One of the biggest reasons people struggle with exercising regularly is that they pick goals that are too overwhelming and big. Sure, it's nice to be ambitious, but it's important to start small if you want to stay motivated along the way.

Come up with a few small goals you can use to give you confidence and momentum, such as:

  • Losing five pounds
  • Cooking at home five days per week
  • Running a 10-minute mile
  • Lifting a certain weight

It's the little things that will help you along the way to your larger goals, so don't get too overwhelmed by the big picture.

Treat Yourself!

Those little goals you've set for yourself? Celebrate them! Once you reach one of your smaller milestones, make sure to reward yourself for all that hard work with a day trip to your favorite place, a new sweater you've had your eye on, or even tickets to a new movie. Just make sure not to reward yourself in a way that will take away from your health and wellness goals, such as a trip to your favorite ice cream parlor!

Create a Schedule

It only takes a few minutes to schedule all your workout in your calendar, so do it. When it's in your calendar it'll feel more like an appointment you shouldn't miss, which goes a long way with helping you stick to your guns to build your guns!

Another plus to putting it in your calendar is that you will remember to schedule other things around your workout time, not the other way around. That helps make exercise a priority for you.

Learn the Language of Positivity

What you say to yourself is more important than you may think. When you work out, try to use positive language to motivate yourself instead of putting yourself down. Thinking that you can't do it or that something is too hard will limit your results and often create a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts -- if you think you can't do it, then you may just be right.
