Keep on reading to learn more about allergies, including the different ways they can manifest, the areas of your body they may impact, and what you can do to lessen or even prevent the symptoms from wreaking havoc on your daily life.
What is an Allergy?
It's important to know that, even though the substance causing your body's allergic reaction is the culprit, it's your body's response to that substance that's actually creating your symptoms. Simply put, any allergy you may experience is the result of your immune system reacting to a foreign substance as if it's a threat. Ironically, the foreign substance itself isn't usually actually harmful -- although your immune system responds as though it is harmful. You can think of it as a very strong overreaction thanks to a melodramatic immune system.
The symptoms that normally come along with an allergic reaction include sneezing, coughing, itchy skin, and watery eyes. Theses are all examples of your body trying to "protect" itself from a particular substance or substances.
Types of Allergies
Unfortunately, there are a wide variety of substances out there that can contribute to an allergic reaction.
Seasonal allergies - These are also known as hay fever. Like the name suggests, these allergies tend to occur during a change in seasons. Symptoms include a runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and coughing.
Food allergies - Reactions brought about by specific food items are called food allergies. Hives, swelling, and fatigue are common reactions to food allergies.
Skin allergies - These often result from something you come into contact with, but can be caused by an allergy to food as well. Swelling, itchiness, and redness in a specific area may occur.
Treatment and Prevention
It's best to consult with your primary healthcare provider on the best ways to treat your allergies. However, there are some helpful things you can do at home to relieve the worst of your symptoms.
There are plenty of over-the-counter medications designed to relieve common allergy symptoms, so consider giving them a try. For a more natural approach, remember to keep your diet full of minimally processed foods in order to reduce your chances of setting off your immune system due to additives or preservatives. If you think a certain food may be triggering your symptoms, try phasing it out of your diet and keeping a journal to track your symptoms as they come and go, along with what food you've been eating.
