Easy Ways to Improve Focus

By Stepy Kamei

It always feels great when you're able to get down to business and stay focused on any tasks you may have before you. Whether you're facing an important deadline at work, or you've got a list of chores which needs to be taken care of sooner rather than later, having a strong sense of focus can make all the difference when it comes to how quickly and effectively you can meet these goals. Unfortunately, focus can be rather elusive at times. It turns out that the habits you instill in your daily life can make a huge impact on how robust your focus and concentration is throughout the day. Keep on reading to learn about the little steps you can take to increase your sense of focus so you can stay motivated and productive all day long.

Make Sleep a Priority

First and foremost, you need to make a good night's sleep your priority. People who sleep poorly, or less than at least seven hours a night, tend to experience reduced productivity, energy, and motivation throughout the day, meaning they have a harder time focusing on most tasks. Be sure to go to sleep at the same time every night, and aim to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep. It may help to have some calming rituals before bed to signal to your body and brain that it's time to rest: drink a cup of herbal tea, take a long bath, or spritz some aromatherapy spray on you pillow as you get into bed.

Keep a Journal/Write it Out

Sometimes, there's so much going on in our lives, it's hard to concentrate on what needs our attention and focus in the present moment. Sound familiar? You may want to try writing out what's going on. You can start by writing lists of things which need to be done first. Writing these tasks down can help you train your focus on the most pressing issues on your plate.

It can also help to free write your feelings and stressors into a journal, even for just five minutes every day. Many people find that after writing about whatever is bothering them, their minds feel clearer, and they are better able to focus on what needs to get done.

Take a Break

As important as it is to avoid procrastination, you also want to avoid burning out. If you aren't getting the rest and time away from work that you need, you're more likely to burn out sooner, and have an even harder time getting your sense of focus back.

Be sure to take some time out to rest and recharge, every single day. It's up to you to figure out which activities work best to relax you. Some people like going for walks, working out, or practicing yoga. Others may prefer to meditate or listen to soothing music. Taking time to be creative and draw, paint, or craft something can also be incredibly recharging. Figure out what works for you, and be sure to build some time into your busy schedule to rebuild your energy and focus.
