Benefits of a Good Night's Sleep

By Lexi Herrin

Although a lot of people know this, some don't know that sleep can drastically affect your health. A good night's sleep not only improves your concentration and productivity, it can also maximize athletic performance, improve your immune system, and decrease your risk for illnesses and diseases. Not getting a good night's sleep can lead to a drastic negative effect on your health which can lead to the development of some diseases and even unwanted weight gain.

Improve Concentration and Productivity

Sleep is important for brain function. Short or inadequate sleep has been shown to negatively affect your concentration, productivity, and performance. On the other hand, adequate sleep has shown improvement in problem solving skills and has been shown to enhance the memory performance for both children and adults. Some sources even report that a short and inadequate sleep can negatively affect the brain in a similar way to alcohol intoxication.

Maximize Athletic Performance and Improved Immune Health

Good sleep has also been shown to improve athletic performance. Longer sleep has been known to improve speed, reaction time, and mental well-being in athletes. In one study it found that poor sleep was linked to slower walking, lower grip strength, and a greater difficulty performing independent tasks in older women. Sleep also affects your immune health. Even the smallest amount of loss in sleep can greatly affect your chance of developing an illness. The more good quality sleep you get, the less likely you are to develop an illness. Eight hours is the ideal amount of sleep you need to avoid illness and boost your immune system.

Poor Sleep Increases Risk for Illnesses and Diseases

Poor sleep has also been linked to illnesses and diseases. Poor sleep has been known to increase inflammation, chances of developing depression, glucose metabolism, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and even a higher body weight. When you have an adequate amount of good sleep, you are less likely to develop those diseases and your immune system can help fight off illnesses.
