How to Beat the End of Summer Blues
By Genevieve Cunningham
The end of summer is almost here. While this brings up an exciting time of year -- back-to-school madness and such -- it’s also a little bit sad. The carefree days of summer are limited, and for many, this can bring a wave of depression. If you tend to feel a little blue as the summer winds down, take a look at these tips to beat the blues and roll into autumn with your mental health intact.
Get Involved
The summer has been a blast. It’s been ripe with activity, and you’ve likely constantly been on the go. Why not take this enthusiastic approach into the fall? Get involved, and do it quickly. Play sports, join a club, or pick up a hobby. The more involved you are, the more fun you’ll have, and the less you’ll be worried about the end of summer. Luckily the fall is a great time for finding activities, as many are just getting started with the beginning of school. Find something that suits your interest, and dive in.
Find a Silver Lining
It’s OK to look ahead and find the silver lining. Maybe you’re not crazy about school starting, but this means that Halloween is coming! And then the holidays! For most people, this is something to look forward to. Maybe you’re excited about football season or the change in weather. Maybe you can think about your new fall wardrobe. Whatever helps you find a little happiness in the near future, find it and focus on it to get you through the muck.
Soak It In
Don’t forget that summer isn’t quite over yet. Even if you’re back in school, the summer months are still happening. Soak in all of the sun and warm days that you can. Soak in some beach fun Saturdays. Get all you can from the summer before you begin to mourn its passing. The more you do this, the more ready you’ll be to welcome the fall when it comes blowing in.
It’s normal to feel a little sadness when a new season comes to an end. It signals time passing, and that can be tough. But it doesn’t have to be all gloomy. Use these tips to find the good in your life, and get excited about what’s coming with the new season of the year and life.
