Protect Your Head While Cycling!
By Donna Stark
Have you been on the roads lately? If you have, I am sure you have seen plenty of people who should probably be paying a lot more attention to their driving than what they really are. Distracted driving is on the rise but it's not fair to place all the blame on our phones. There are plenty of other things that take our attention off the road too. From eating to applying makeup to appeasing a crying child, all it takes is a second of looking the other way for an accident to occur. And although everyone is at risk when they get behind the wheel, there is a group of people who feel that risk on a completely different level ... cyclists.
Cycling Safety Tips
No matter how safe of a cyclist you are, it's important to remember that accidents can still happen and they can happen anywhere, so it is crucial that you take every precaution to keep yourself safe. One of the most important things you can do to increase your level of safety is to wear a helmet consistently. If you don't already have a helmet, or if you are in the market for a new one, take a look at the following tips on how to select the right one for your head.
- Fit - Obviously, you need to make sure the helmet you select fits your head properly. If you choose a helmet that doesn't fit, you are compromising the protection that it is designed for. A good-fitting helmet should be snug but not painfully tight. Measure the circumference of your head before you go to the store because that is what the sizing is based on and if you need more help, don't be afraid to ask.
- Style - You may think that helmets are all alike, but actually, there are several different styles to choose from (recreational helmets, road bike helmets, and mountain bike helmets). A good starting point would be to consider what type of cycling you do and then choose the one that best suits your needs.
- Features - You should also think about any added features you may want on your helmet. Do you ride in the dark and need extra light? Do you want a mounted camera so that you can record your rides? Keep in mind though, that with every added feature, the price will likely increase.
Protection at its Best
If your helmet is involved in a crash or has sustained any damage, it is recommended that it be replaced immediately. Otherwise, an accident-free helmet should last you for several years. So go ahead and invest in your safety. Get your helmet today and stay safe on those roads!
