The Little Things Can Still Get You

By Tom Herrin

When it comes to back injuries, most people think of them as a result of an accident or lifting some object without being properly prepared.  Those can be pretty devastating injuries.  Many times the little things can have every bit the impact on anyone’s health.  If age is added to that, there could be an exponential increase in the problem.  Those small things can seem really small and creep up without notice.  For someone who strolls out in the yard, the effect of simply picking up sticks and objects that have blown or fallen can catch them by surprise.  If this sudden onset of back pain catches you, it is no surprise that a trip to a chiropractor can get you back to normal.

The Little Problem Effect

When someone is out in the yard simply picking things up, it really seems to be light work.  Some would consider it to be no work at all.  Bending down and picking things up repeatedly without any prior activity as such can begin to wear the muscles in the back.  Part of the problem is that it seems so minor that people keep doing it for much longer than they realize.  Before long, their backs begin to get stiff, then become a little painful.  The next thing they know, they have gone over that threshold and there is pain.  It may continue well beyond a rest.  When the muscles become strained, they fail to provide the support needed for the spine.  The joints tend to take the brunt of any physical stress.  This causes a joint dysfunction in which pressure is applied to a nerve, causing pain.

No Cape, Just Good Hands

Chiropractors can seem a little like superheroes to people with back pain.  They can gently manipulate the spine so that an injured joint will be restored to its normal position.  When this happens, the pressure is relieved from the nerve.  This will result in the pain being relieved and a better feeling of overall health returning.  Chiropractors will often suggest some exercises to help strengthen muscles in the area of a joint injury.  The goal is natural treatment.
