There's Still Time for Picnics!

By Donna Stark

Even though July was National Picnic Month, that doesn't mean you can't head on out to your local park and enjoy one this month. After all, summer isn't over yet and there is still plenty of sunshine to enjoy. But if you want a successful picnic (which means you don't want anyone to end up sick in bed or hurt), there are some simple precautions you need to take. Take a look at the following suggestions and tips on how to pack for a wonderful and safe picnic.

Pick the Perfect Spot

When trying to decide on the perfect picnic spot, you may want to do some research first. Ask your friends and family for recommendations or check out the websites of your local towns. Many will list the parks, lakes, and recreation areas that would make an ideal spot for your picnic. And if you aren't located near any of their suggestions, just take your picnic to your backyard!

Pack the Right Foods

Save yourself and your companions from upset stomachs by planning your menu ahead of time and filling it with foods that are safe to eat at room temperature. Items like chips, crackers, salad, fresh fruit and vegetables are great choices to consider. You can even stick with your favorite childhood sandwich ... peanut butter and jelly! Just remember to pack some beverages too! Water is the best choice if you are going to be outside under the sun for a couple of hours.

But if you want to pack some cold foods too, be sure to surround your food and beverages with ice packs. Also, keep the lid closed at all times so the coolness doesn't escape your container.

Remember the Extras

Before you leave, make sure the supplies you pack include any plates or utensils you may need, bug spray, sunblock, and a blanket. If you want to enjoy some physical activity, pack a Frisbee, football, or some lawn darts. Then as soon as you get to your destination, try to scout out the biggest tree for shade. You may not want the shade at first, but after spending a couple of hours in the sun, you will!

August Is for Picnics Too

Planning ahead and being prepared is the best way to enjoy a picnic, so keep the above tips in mind the next time you want to have an afternoon in the park. Just hurry though! Summer is nearly over and chillier weather is right around the corner!
