Planning the Perfect Hike
By Donna Stark
Forget the fall foliage road trip. If you want to see all the splendor that Mother Nature has to offer during this time of year, you need to get up close and personal to it, and there is no better way to do so than to head outdoors for a hike! But before you spontaneously jump in the car and head for the hills, you need to plan ahead! Take a look at the following tips on how to get the most from your fall hikes.
Find the Beauty
Many people spend their time hiking to a specific location and fail to appreciate the beauty of the landscape along the way. Whether your goal is to end up at a certain waterfall, scenic overlook, lake, or rock formation, don't forget to enjoy the hike there. Take time to explore the area around you as you progress along the trail. You may end up seeing something new to love!
Take Breaks
Have you ever sat down on a chair and didn't realize how tired your body was until you did so? The same thing can happen while hiking. And surprisingly, the hike doesn't even have to be long and grueling for that to occur. So, go ahead and take as many breaks as you need. Don't worry about people passing you on the trails.
Pack Water and Snacks
You are going to expend a ton of energy during your hike and you may be dealing with higher altitudes, so make sure you carry plenty of water along with you. On top of that, if you are going to be hiking for several hours, you may want to consider packing some snacks as well! Fruit, granola bars, or a sandwich are good options to bring.
Use a Backpack
There is nothing worse than trying to maintain your balance or catch yourself from falling when your hands are full, so do yourself a favor and use a backpack. You can carry your snacks, water, camera, phone, and safety supplies in it while keeping your hands empty and free!
Wear Layers
The temperature may be mild when you step out of your house, but once you are in the shade of the trees, you may be in for a shocking surprise. Before you leave, make sure you have an extra layer to wear. And remember, if you don't need it, you have that backpack to put it in!
The Perfect Day
Road trips through the mountains are beautiful this time of year, but hikes are even better. And with careful planning, you can create the perfect day and the best hike ever! Have fun and stay safe!
