4 Habits to Improve Your Health
By Donna Stark
Your health is off-track. It's not something you planned for and it's certainly not something you want to continue, but for the moment, it is what it is. And even though it may look pretty grim right now, there is good news to be had: You are in control. Achieving improved health and wellness always starts with you, and you alone, so what are you going to do about it? Are you unsure of where to start? Well, here are some great suggestions on how to build a strong foundation of health so you can get back on the right path.
Diet
It's no secret that an unhealthy diet is linked to poor health, but do you know to what extent? Take a look at what an unhealthy diet can lead to.
- Joint dysfunction
- Allergies
- Digestive issues
- Weight gain
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Osteoporosis
- Cancer
A healthy diet starts with great nutrition, so start eating with more intention! Fill your meals with whole grains, fatty fish, lean protein, heart-healthy fats, and plenty of fruit and vegetables. It's also important to reduce or eliminate saturated fats, sodium, refined sugar, and highly-processed foods.
Hydration
Water. There's no other way to put this ... water is key to your health and without it, your body will fail to function as it should. It helps to regulate your body's temperature, lubricate your joints, protect your spinal cord, aid in digestion, enhance cognitive function, reduce the risk of certain cancers actually, I could go on for days, so I will just say this: Drink your water, then drink some more!
Exercise
Regular exercise is a key component to optimal health and wellness, and getting at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day is a good place to start. Exercise helps to reduce your risk of chronic disease, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your mood, enhance your critical thinking skills, and maintain a healthy weight.
Sleep
If you are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, you have to prioritize sleep! Inadequate sleep can impact both your physical and mental health. In fact, sleep deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, poor memory, and depression. It's important to maintain a regular bedtime routine and to design a room that is conducive to quality sleep.
