Staying in Control When You Feel the Opposite

By Donna Stark

Anyone else struggling with anxiety today? If you are, it's time to take some action. It's time to calm your spirit with effective tips and suggestions on how to get through these trying times. It's time to put aside the things you can't control and focus on the things you can. It's time to take care of yourself and your family in the healthiest way possible. So what do you say? Do you think it's time to say goodbye to what is bringing you down and start your day tomorrow with a fresh, clean slate? You bet it is!

Reducing Your Anxiety

Anxiety certainly has a way of rearing its ugly head at the worst times possible but reminding yourself of the things you can control while living a life that feels out of control may help. And actually, you're in more control than you think. Take a look at where you can start.

Diet

Anxiety can cause many people to make unwise food choices but you can put a stop to that in your own life right now! Make sure you are purchasing nutrient-dense foods at the store and pack your meals and snacks for those times when you aren't at home. You want only the freshest, most healthy items available when your emotions take over so you can ensure your diet isn't taking a hit.

Exercise

Exercise has been shown time and time again to reduce both stress and anxiety in a person's life. On top of that, it's good for the body too! So carve out some time during your day (you only need 30 minutes) and give your body the boost it needs. Daily exercise can be a very powerful way to find some extra control!

Sleep

Prioritizing quality sleep isn't just important for your general health, it can also help with feelings of anxiety, as your body is less likely to feel overwhelmed or anxious when you've slept well. If you are struggling with sleep, it is critical that you take some proactive steps to find the rest you need. Here are a few suggestions.

  • Redesign your bedroom for nothing but sleep
  • Keep your room dark and cool
  • Eliminate caffeine and other stimulants from your diet
  • Remove your clock and other electronic devices (leave them in the hall or adjoining bathroom if you use them for your morning alarm)
  • Try nighttime relaxation techniques, such as warm baths, calm music, or breathing exercises

Taking Control for More Calm

It isn't always possible to remove all the stress and anxiety in your life but by controlling the things that you can, you may be able to reduce quite a bit of it. And that's important. So start today and remember ... you got this!
