Is Sleep Serving Its Purpose For You?

By Tom Herrin

Getting enough quality sleep should be the goal of everyone.  No doubt, people have different needs according to their individual makeup.  However, a pretty set fact is that everyone needs sleep and it is a sound bet they require at least six hours to be really rested.  Many require more, according to age and other factors.  Far too many people find themselves getting by on far less sleep than they need.  Between busy schedules of school, social, or work activities, they tend to get too tied up and fail to pay enough attention to the details required for resting as they should.

Sleep Is A Remedy For Many Problems

There are countless benefits of sleep, many of which often go unrecognized.  It can help people to tap their creative abilities.  It can also improve mental functions in things that require concentration such as math.  Athletic performance can be enhanced when someone has adequate sleep.  It is believed to reduce inflammation, as is indicated in bloodwork of those affected.  Studies have shown that blood pressure may also be improved in individuals with successful treatment of sleep problems.

Sleep May Be Improved

Several things have been linked to problems with sleep for many people.  It is known that eating too much or too close to the time people go to bed may cause poor sleep.  Even though it can promote better sleep, exercising too late in the evening can inhibit sleep.  Sometimes the sleep environment can be a problem.  A close look at the bed, pillows, and room temperature can reveal some issues that are contributing the lack of ability to sleep well.  A longtime known problem for many people is caffeine.  Too much can easily add to sleeplessness and prevent people from getting restful sleep.

You Have To Be Part of the Solution

Anytime you want results from a problem, you have to be an active participant.  You will need to search out those things that may work for you as an individual.  Trying to improve your schedule can help.  You may also consider changing some of your eating habits.  Certain foods can be conducive to sleep.  Lighting conditions may be a large factor for many.  For some people, noise can be a positive or negative.  The key is to experiment and find something that works for you.  If you improve your sleep, the chances are much greater that you can improve your health, as well.
