Are You Guilty of These Exercise Time Wasters?

By Sara Butler

With your busy schedule, fitting in a workout probably is not very easy. When you do hit the gym it makes sense you want to maximize your efforts and get the most out of your workout. There are a few things people inadvertently do that are huge time wasters at the gym. Are you making these time-wasting mistakes during your workout?

Too Much Rest

Of course, you need to give your body time to recover between intense gym sessions, but there’s a difference between resting appropriately and getting too much rest. You can guarantee you don’t make this mistake by breaking up your workout a bit. Separate your moves into muscle-specific sets, so you do one set, then move on to another giving the other muscles time to rest in-between without overdoing it.

Reading or Watching the Tube

The gym might be full of TVs you can tune out to, or you may enjoy bringing along a book to help you pass the time at the gym – these are common tactics. Unfortunately, these activities can add time to your workout without giving you any benefit. You may not really push yourself if you’re focused on your book or that episode of your favorite crime drama. Focus on what you’re doing and where you’re doing it and you’ll get a better workout in less time.

Hanging with Pals

Working out with a buddy can be very beneficial since buddies can help get you to the gym even when you don’t feel like it. The problem is when you keep right on socializing during your workout. You may not hit your cardio goals if you don’t want to get out of breath so you can discuss the latest celebrity gossip with your friends! Focus on what you’re doing instead and save the socializing for before and after.

Poor Form

If you don’t do your exercises appropriately and with proper form, you won’t get the full benefit from them. Not to mention that poor or incorrect form can be a formula for injury. Find out how to exercise the right way by either looking them up online or signing up with a trainer at your gym.

Working out is great for you, but you need to make sure you’re getting the full benefits from working out. Your time is worth a lot, so use it wisely and don’t make these mistakes!
