Fresh Air for a Fresh Workout

By Donna Stark

The temperatures have finally started to cool down and the time has come to say goodbye to the hazy, hot, and humid weather we have been dealing with for the past couple of months. It's also time to leave our air-conditioned gyms and bring our workouts outdoors! There are so many activities that are available for everyone, so no matter what your age, physical condition, or athletic ability, there is sure to be something for you! Are you ready to get moving? Let's go!

Fresh Air for a Fresh Workout

Before we go over some ideas for outdoor workouts, let's take a look at how your fitness will be affected by the change in scenery.

  • You will work out longer - It has been shown that when people take their fitness routine outdoors, they generally exercise longer and enjoy it more than when they are indoors, and it's easy to see why. The weather is beautiful, the scenery can't be beat, and the setting is more relaxing.
  • You will challenge yourself more - No matter how good your treadmill is, it will never be able to simulate the challenges you face when exercising outdoors, such as changes in the terrain and weather, and the natural obstacles found along your path.
  • You can reduce your stress - One of the most important gifts that Mother Nature gives us is the naturally beautiful setting that helps to reduce our stress. Exercising outdoors has also been shown to improve moods and boost energy.

Workout Suggestions

Since it will soon be too cold to exercise outdoors, why don't you take advantage of the season and add some variety to your routine? Here are some fun suggestions.

  • Hiking - Enjoy the breathtaking beauty during this time of year and improve your strength by taking your workouts to the local trails. Look online to find the trail that best suits your needs (consider how steep the trail is and how much climbing you will need to do) and don't forget to pack plenty of water.
  • Trail running - If you want to enjoy the cool air but don't want to climb, consider trail running. It's just as easy to find a trail you can run on as it is to find a more rigorous trail to climb. Again, be sure to pack enough water to get you through the workout.
  • Outdoor sports - Grab your friends, family, or coworkers and join a sports league. A little friendly competition never hurt anyone and it may be just enough of an incentive to get more people involved with fitness.

Better Health for Everyone

The fall season is the perfect time to head outdoors for a little bit of physical activity, so throw on some layers, grab your sweatshirts, and head outdoors for some amazing workouts!
