Can Your Posture Predict Your Future?

By Sandy Schroeder

There are a lot of posture warnings out there. But you might be startled by your own posture if you really look at it in a three-way mirror. You might see the beginnings of slumped shoulders, forward head posture, and a sagging abdomen.

Are You In a Slump?

Now, people of all ages are slipping into damaging posture positions, as screens gobble up more and more of our time.  Ask a friend to take a picture of your posture, and see where you stand, or slump.

If your posture could be better, the best way to fix it might be to visit The Joint Chiropractic clinic near you. Licensed trained chiropractors will have the answers you need to avoid future complications.

Over time, as we bend forward over screens, the neck and head may move forward past the shoulders, and fat can begin to form a hump on the back of the neck. Left unchecked, breathing difficulties and upper back pain can develop, as posture problems grow.

Humps are classified as upper-thoracic or Dowager’s hump. Most of us have seen a senior with Dowager’s hump, where poor posture and loss of muscle have locked them into a severe bent forward position. But now, upper-thoracic humps with future implications are showing up in all ages.

How Chiropractic Can Help

Your chiropractor focuses on the health of your spine, using a spinal adjustment to assess spinal health and correct misalignments. If you have misalignments, and the beginnings of a slumped posture, the goal will be to realign the spine and correct the posture.

Using a spinal adjustment, your chiropractor will ask about your work and leisure habits, and the amount of time you spend on screens. There will also be a review of your medical history.

Together, you and your chiropractor can see what might be needed with regular posture exercises, and improved patterns of use for screens at home and on the job.

As the spine is realigned, and you learn to track your posture, the goal will be to stop the problem before it manages to get a grip.

Check Out Your Family

At the same time, you might check for posture problems in your family, as you see your kids, flopped out on the floor focusing on screens, or your spouse as slumped on the couch at the end of a long day.  You might want to bring your whole family in, asking your chiropractor to help everyone rethink their use of screens to beat that ongoing slump.

Getting more help can be as easy as stopping by The Joint Chiropractic in your community. The Joint makes everything easy.
