Too Young for Chiropractic? Maybe Not

By Paul Rothbart

Chiropractic has now been established as a viable treatment option for relieving and preventing pain in the back, neck and other joints. For many, the term conjures up images of middle age and older patients, hunched over with back pain due to overwork. Certainly the young and strong have no need for such treatment. Think again. Proper spinal alignment is important at any age and is particularly important in young bodies that have not finished developing. College students and even high schoolers can benefit greatly from chiropractic adjustments. There are physical and lifestyle factors common to this age group that can make a visit to a chiropractor worth considering.

Backpacks and Books and Sports, Oh My

Adolescents are generally students. That means lugging around textbooks and notebooks, often in a backpack. Some of these tomes are quite heavy. If you've ever had a look at a college first-year chemistry text, you know what I mean.  A load like this puts quite a strain on the neck, back and shoulders and can throw the spine out of alignment.

Students also tend to be active physically in extracurriculars such as sports or marching bands. While fun and beneficial, the potential for damage and injury are ever present. A trip to the chiropractor can prevent this.

Text Me

Young people, perhaps more so than anyone are all about screens. Text messaging and social media on cell phones is the order of the day. This is a useful form of communication but it involves the head angled down to view the device. It is quite easy to put a strain on the neck and spine, causing pain in many parts of the body and even tension headaches. Chiropractic is a good preventative measure for this problem too.

Growth and Development

Chiropractic can also be very helpful for younger kids, in their tweens. Developing bodies should be monitored to prevent problems like scoliosis. A strong and healthy spine is essential to grow into a physically fit adult. Regular examinations and adjustments by a qualified chiropractor can keep the spine aligned and assure healthy growth to full maturity.

Older adults often have back pain that is effectively relieved through chiropractic treatment. But they are not the only ones who can benefit from regular spinal realignment. Teens, with their active schedules, hauling books to class, heading to practices and rehearsals, all with a body that is still growing and developing are prime candidates for the capable hands of a good chiropractor.
