3 Tips for Healthy Travel This Summer - 2nd Week

By Genevieve Cunningham

Traveling is so much fun. Who doesn’t love a good vacation or a few nights away from it all? When it comes to summer, there’s nothing greater to look forward to than a little traveling with friends and family. There are only two big drawbacks to travel: Your health and your pocketbook. Both take a big hit while you’re out and about having fun. While the answer to your pocketbook woes may be all about saving and planning, there might be things that you can do to help protect your health. Take a look at these three tips for traveling with your health intact this summer.

Pack Your Own Food

I know this makes it a lot more difficult and takes up precious space, but packing your own healthy foods keeps you from binging on fast food. When you rely on quick and easy food for your vacation, you’ll likely end up eating hundreds of calories more than you intended. Pack a cooler, bring some good snacks, and plan your eating out carefully to avoid too many trips through the drive-thru.

Take Frequent Breaks

This is especially true if you’re traveling by car. Factor in plenty of time to stop and stretch your legs. Even five minutes here or there can help you stretch out your muscles, loosen stiff joints, and give you a little energy. It’ll be needed once you get to your destination, and you’ll be glad you took the extra time to protect your health and wellness.

Plan a Workout Routine

When we’re some place new, it’s easy to skip the workout completely. We're on vacation! What will it hurt? Don’t do it; instead, plan ahead. Are you staying in a hotel? Choose one with a fully equipped workout room. Going to the beach? Take a long walk or jog along the sea. If neither of those is an option, write down a quick list of calisthenic exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc.), and perform a set or two every day or every night.

If you want to stay healthy, you have to work for it … even when you’re on vacation! Though we want to throw caution and common sense to the wind, protecting your health should still be at the top of your list. Luckily, with some easy tips and a little bit of preparation, you can keep yourself healthy and strong all vacation long.
