3 Reasons You Should Remain Emotionally Stable

By Genevieve Cunningham

Emotional stability is a big deal … and also a very tough thing to get a handle on. Our emotions are often much bigger than we are, and many people lack the coping skills necessary to keep them under control. But emotional distress can have big consequences on both your mental and physical well-being. Take a look at these reasons why maintaining emotional control is so important, followed by some tips on how to do so.

Instability Can Worsen Depression

Depression loves emotional instability. And it’s not just sadness or worry that feeds low moods … it’s the swing of emotions and the hormonal shifts that follow them. Does this mean you should never feel anything? Of course not! It simply means that you should learn coping mechanisms that keep each emotion in check. When you’re happy, feel happy! When you’re sad, feel sad! But don’t allow yourself to go from elation to despair in a span of five minutes. While big changes in emotion will happen in times of sorrow or great stress, it shouldn’t be an everyday occurrence, especially if you want to beat depression in a more natural way.

Constant Ups and Downs Lead to a Lack of Focus

Many people notice this as one of the very first side effects of emotional instability. Concentration goes out the window! When your emotions are taking over, it clouds your thinking. It may feel almost impossible to focus on the task at hand or to get any particular thing done to completion. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can cause big problems over time. You’ll soon find it nearly impossible to function, and the results of this can be disastrous for work, family, and personal obligations.

Instability Enhances Physical Health Problems

Emotional upheaval causes stress. Your body will flood itself with the stress hormone, and excessive amounts of this hormone can exacerbate already troublesome problems in your body. Heart conditions, diabetes, and even everyday illness may become worse. You may gain a few pounds. You might notice migraines, muscle cramps, or stiff joints. Your immune system may take a noticeable nosedive. Your emotions are tightly linked to the physical happenings in your body, so if you allow those emotions to get out of control, you may find your body following suit.

If you have a bit of trouble controlling your emotions, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Learn coping mechanisms such as meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or others. Talk to a professional on a regular basis. Exercise every day in order to relieve that stress and calm your mind. Stay busy. All of these things can help you beat emotional instability and keep your health in check for a healthier, happier tomorrow.
