4 Easy Steps To Keep Your Heart Happy & Healthy

 

Most of us are aware that taking care of the heart is something that needs to be at the top of our list of things to do, and deem important.

But in the day to day rush, eating the wrong foods, skipping the gym, and putting in a lot of hours at work can sometimes push our good intentions aside. The thing that made me realize how significant this issue could be, showed up in the Mayo Clinic’s recent statement. They said four out of five cases of heart disease do not have to happen. They can be prevented by taking care of the heart.

So all of those time partaking in bad habits really can do a lot more damage than most people think. Essentially they are telling us, in most cases, we actually have the power to avoid heart disease by just making the effort.

What Is the Effort?

Well Mayo also tells us how to do just that with an easy formula, “Eat 5, Move 10 and Sleep Eight.”

Eat 5 means getting at least five servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Whatever it takes, see how you can make this happen with berries on your cereal, fruits and salads for lunch, and veggie side dishes with dinner. Start with your favorites like corn on the cob or melons, and then just keep shopping for new additions.

Move 10 means getting out for a brisk 10 minute walk every day is a good start for the heart. As you make that a morning or afternoon habit, then kick it up for another 10, or add in another sport like biking. Every time you are out there moving, your heart is benefitting.

Sleep Eight means getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night. If that is hard to do, work a little harder to make your bedroom a haven. Skip alcohol, tobacco, spicy snacks and screen time right before bedtime, and shoot for the same routine each night.

Finally, the fourth part of the formula is to make sure you take time to enjoy life. That really is the overall goal for most of us, but it can be easy to lose sight of it when schedules get crazy and hours get long. Whatever it takes, give your heart the benefit of some quality time, wherever that fits for you. Going for the good times becomes just as important as the rest of the formula when we consider doctors also warn us that anger, hostility and depression can also be triggers for heart attacks and strokes.
