Chiropractic and Heart Disease
Heart disease is the most common noncommunicable disease in the United States, accounting for 31% of total deaths in 2014. When we take into consideration that 82% of all mortality in the United States is related to noncommunicable disease, heart disease accounts for roughly one third of the total noncommunicable disease burden.
This condition is preventable, with proper diet, adequate exercise, and focusing on an overall holistic approach to healthy living can ward off the development of heart disease later in life. However, once heart disease has set in, no matter what level of severity, it is difficult to reverse.
In terms of the reversal of heart disease, there are definitely strategies in existence. Unfortunately, with the exception of dietary and exercise adjustments, many of these reversal strategies involve pharmaceuticals. However more bodies of research are being produced that point to the role of chiropractic care in the reversal of heart disease.
With a focus on the proper alignment of the spine and other musculoskeletal components, arteries and veins with high blood flow capacity are said to be aligned properly as well, facilitating the optimal level of blood flow throughout the body. Even if there is hypertension or improper functioning of a vessel within the heart, proper layout of the arteries and veins can improve the functioning of the entire circulatory system.
In some cases, research has conveyed that there is a role of neurological interference in the development of cardiovascular issues. If signals and impulses are not sent and received throughout the proper channels, there is sometimes extra stress placed on the heart and the rest of the circulatory system. It has been well documented that if there are problems with the alignment of the spine and other parts of the musculoskeletal system, neurological pathways can be segmented and the transmittal of these signals can be inhibited. A proportion of these signals carry information regarding the endocrine system and certain hormone levels, some of which are integral to maintaining stability within the cardiovascular system.
Many within the medical community, both patients and professionals alike, are sometimes forgetful of the fact that each and every body system is interconnected. With chiropractic care being more accepted as a way to manage the interaction between the musculoskeletal system and the neurological system, there is surely the possibility that the management of this interaction can improve cardiovascular health. Even if heart disease has already set in, looking to the improvement of other body systems to reverse these conditions can potentially be a viable solution.
