Are You Wasting Your Time at the Gym?

The chiropractors at The Joint are big proponents of exercise to increase their patient’s health and wellness. They want you to get the most of your gym sweat sessions. Still, many people waste their precious time at the gym in ways they may not realize. Here is some advice to help you understand the ways you may be wasting your time at the gym.

Stretching

OK – don’t freak out! Yes, chiropractors often talk about the ways you can benefit from stretching. Of course, this doesn’t apply to every single situation. One area in which stretching won’t benefit you as much as you think is in weightlifting. When it comes to lifts, you don’t need flexibility, you need mobility. Going through full range of motion exercises are really all you need to prepare to hit the weight room at the gym. Extra stretching won’t help to alleviate soreness or improve strength with your lifting program.

The best things you can do for your muscles when working with weights is to see your chiropractor regularly to improve mobility and embrace the foam roll. Foam rolling is very effective for increasing range of motion, more so than stretching will be!

Cardio Before Lifting

If it’s summer and you’re already warm, then there’s no need to do anything else before you start lifting! When it’s cold outside is when you need to be concerned about getting your muscles warm before a workout. In that case, a quick jog or a couple of minutes on the rowing machine should be just fine.

You Don’t Have a Plan

The biggest way to waste time at the gym is to go in without a plan. Strolling from one machine to another or socializing with friends will not help you to get fit and healthy. For a more efficient use of your time, create a workout plan. Decide beforehand what type of exercises you want to do, what areas you want to target, and how many reps and sets you need to do. This way you’ll spend less time wandering around and more time benefiting your body!
