Stretching, Swimming, and Skating: 3 Spring Options
By Brandi Goodman
During the spring and throughout the summer as well, there are several fitness activities you should be doing. Stretching, swimming, and skating can make up the majority of your exercise routine and give you great results. If you want to improve flexibility, tone your body, and strengthen your muscles, these three options should be on your list.
Stretching
It's important to stretch out your body before doing any sort of physical activity. This isn't just a spring option. You should be doing it year-round anytime you're about to have your muscles working. A quick walk around the block paired with a few simple stretches is a great way to start any routine. You want your body prepared for the workout ahead.
Swimming
Swimming is a fun yet rewarding activity you can do during the warmer months. You can of course swim during the cold months as well, but you'll need to stick with an indoor pool in most circumstances. Swimming outdoors is a great way to get in exercise time while also taking in the Vitamin D the sunshine provides. Try different strokes to make your way through the water if you want to work different parts of your arms. You can also tread water, kicking your legs to keep yourself going as you keep your hands above the water. It'll have your legs toned in no time.
Skating
Another great way to tone the legs is by skating. Whether you choose roller skates or a pair of blades, gliding down the road on wheels takes a lot more stability than you might imagine. This is a terrific workout that focuses primarily on the legs but also targets the core as well as you keep yourself balanced and upright. You'll get the same boost in Vitamin D that swimming provides since you're outdoors. Skating (or blading) is ideal for building muscle strength and keeping the bones strong, particularly in the lower body.
Combine these three activities and you'll be fit this spring and summer. It's recommended to spend at least 30 minutes per day exercising. Stretch and swim one day and stretch and skate the next for a routine that will leave you toned, flexible, and stress-free. You may even experience some weight loss if that's a goal of yours.
