Try These 6 Strategies For Preventing Falls

By Brandi Goodman

With Older Americans Month in May, elderly people everywhere should learn all they can. This month encourages older adults to learn, improve health, and seek personal enrichment after all. Discovering strategies for preventing falls is a great start since this is a common complaint of seniors. The body becomes weaker and less flexible as we age, making it easier to trip and fall over anything in the way. A few strategies can help to keep this from happening so no bones get broken and injuries are avoided.

Remove Rugs

Rugs that once adorned the hallways should now be removed. The edges tend to peel upward and can make you easily fall. It's better to use non-slip mats if you want something there. Otherwise, avoid placing anything in your main pathway altogether.

Install Grab Bars

The bathroom is one of the most common locations for falls. You might slip in the shower or fall trying to sit down on the toilet. Installing grab bars nearby helps give you something to hold onto so this doesn't happen. You can have one installed near the toilet and one inside the shower so you're able to get up and in when needed.

Get Your Vision Checked

Eyesight can play a major role in the falls you start experiencing.  If you start suffering from poor vision and you find it difficult to see the obstacles in front of you, then a vision check is in order. You should see an eye doctor to have your eyes examined and determine if any conditions are causing these changes.

Exercise Often

Regular exercise is one of the best things you can continue to do for your body. You're more likely to remain upright and balanced on your feet if you have a strong core and legs. Get exercise as often as you can so you can prevent yourself from falling or suffering an injury.

Add Extra Lighting

The lighting in the home can also be a problem. Especially if you're struggling with vision, low lighting can make it hard to see the things around you. Adding extra lighting is a minor way to help yourself see better around the home so you can avoid falls.

Get Regular Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is ideal for fall prevention. Your joints need to remain flexible and well if you want any chance at preventing injury. Joint restrictions may also make it difficult to stand upright or use your full range of motion. This can cause you to fall more easily.

Through the use of preventive methods and chiropractic care, you can stop the falls that so many older adults experience. Visit The Joint Chiropractic for an adjustment as well as additional tips on how to remain healthy and well as you age.
