How to Make a Healthier Milkshake
By Brandi Goodman
National Vanilla Milkshake Day is in June. While many people would simply head to a fast food location and order a shake to get their fix, the better option is to prepare one at home. You can make a healthier milkshake that is still a tasty treat.
Use Low-Fat Milk
A full fat milk isn't the only option. Use low-fat milk instead as a way to cut back on fat and calories and keep your shake as healthy as possible. You can even use coconut or almond milk instead for even more of a health advantage.
Substitute With Stevia
Sugar is usually added to a milkshake to enhance the sweetness. You can substitute with Stevia or another artificial sweetener instead that isn't as harmful as sugar is to the body. You should start by adding just a packet or two to add a little sweetness without overdoing it.
Mix in Protein Powder
If you want a shake that can replace a meal, then mixing in protein powder is important. Protein is necessary to keep you full. This ensures you can enjoy the shake without the need for a full meal as well. You'll get your cold treat fix and be satisfied for a while.
Top With Fat-Free Whipped Cream
Many restaurants offer a dollop of whipped cream on top of their shakes. If you still want to enjoy this added creaminess, then at least use a fat-free version instead. It will save some calories yet still provide the whipped cream you may enjoy.
Add Real Fruit
Just because you're making a shake with milk and not a typical smoothie doesn't mean real fruit can't be involved. A strawberry shake is one of the most common choices. Instead of adding artificial strawberries, real strawberries can be diced up and mixed in easily with a blender. No, it's not vanilla, but it's still a healthy shake option to try another day. If you want to stick with vanilla flavor, just add another fruit in by mixing with a spoon. You'll still get a vanilla shake just with some extra fruit flavor in some bites.
Whether you need a vanilla milkshake for National Vanilla Milkshake Day on June 20 or you want to try another flavor for another time, a healthier version is possible. Skip the fast food options and create a homemade shake that hits the spot just the same. Shakes are great to enjoy on hot days throughout the summer, not just on its special day.
