3 Ways to Get More Rest for Better Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
Most people really do want more sleep. We pride ourselves on staying busy and running from activity to activity on little sleep, but is it really something to be proud of? Are we living better lives or enjoying better health? The likely answer is no. A lack of sleep can contribute to a wide array of negative side effects, and unless we do something about the lack of rest, the suffering could continue long-term. If you're lacking in the sleep department, take a look at these tips for getting more rest for better health.
Don’t Be Afraid of a Nap
Don’t be afraid to take a nap in the afternoon if you need it. In some countries, a nap is even scheduled into the day … because rest is really that important! A quick nap can restore your energy reserves, enhance your focus and concentration, and make it so much easier to get through the rest of the day. And surprisingly, it may even help you sleep at night. Sometimes exhaustion can keep you from resting properly, and getting in a short nap can reset your internal clock. If you're really short on sleep, consider making naps a regular part of your day.
Splurge on Sleeping Items
Sleep is so important, and yet we give it very little thought or direct attention. If you really want more rest, give some thought to your sleeping arrangement. Are you comfortable? Is your body supported? Or are you sleeping on a 15-year-old mattress and saggy pillows? Because of its importance, splurging on sleep items is actually a good idea. Buy a new mattress, get new pillows, and make yourself comfortable. The more comfortable and supported you feel, the better sleep you're going to get every night.
Get Regular
An irregular bedtime routine can absolutely ruin your sleep. If you want to get serious about better sleep, you need to get serious about your routine. Do your best to go to bed at roughly the same time every night, and then wake up at the same time in the morning. The more regular your routine, the more your body adapts, and the better sleep you're going to get.
If you want better health, good sleep should be a staple in your life. The body and mind need rest in order to function efficiently. Use these tips to help you get a little more sleep, and enjoy the boost in health that comes with it.
