3 Fun Ways to Get Fit

By Genevieve Cunningham

Who says that working out has to be difficult? We often think that exercise has to be torturous in one way or another. We think that it has to hurt or be seriously sweat inducing. And while it's true that exercise should challenge us, it's also allowed to be fun! If you'd like to add some fun exercises to the mix, take a look at these super fun ways to get fit that you can start right now.

Dancing

Dancing is so much fun. The good news is that there is a kind of dance that suits just about everyone. Great with rhythm? Check out salsa dancing. Like a serious challenge? Maybe you can learn break dancing. More interested in structure? Look to ballroom. Or you can take up ballet, tap, expressive, hip hop, or any number of dances. When we dance, we work the legs and glutes most especially, but in most situations, we end up working the entire body. A good dance session can leave you sore and tired. And even though you'll probably break a good sweat, you'll have a blast burning those calories and getting in shape.

Swimming

Put on a suit, find a pool, and cannonball your way to better health. OK, you can't just do cannonballs and expect to lose weight, but swimming is actually an incredible workout. It's great for the lungs, and can eventually lead to really good stamina. It also requires the use of all your muscles. And of course, swimming can be really fun. If you haven't been taking advantage of this workout, it's time to begin.

Cycling

Want to feel like a kid again? Buy a bicycle and hit the road  or the trail at the park, whichever is safer. Riding a bike is good for the bottom half of the body, and it's also incredible for burning calories. If you ride at a decent pace (roughly 8-10 miles per hour), you can burn close to 1,000 calories per hour. And it's an activity that you can do with the whole family. If you need a family friendly, effective, but fun workout, cycling should definitely be on your list.

It's OK to actually enjoy your workout. In fact, if you enjoy it, you're much more likely to stick with it. Use these workouts as a starting place, and then add more as you learn what you like. Workouts should be challenging  and fun too! Make exercise fun and you'll be able to enjoy the path to better health just as much as the results.
