Preventing Falls That Change Seniors’ Lives

Too many times I have watched seniors drop back in life, and sometimes totally lose their direction or independence, as a fall brings their lives to a sudden halt, and then changes everything from there.

One senior that I knew, sailed, traveled, and enjoyed every minute of his retirement. But then he fell in the shower, and after that life just seemed to take one down turn after another. Through sheer determination he kept his life going, but it took a great deal of time and effort.

Another senior woman that I knew, fell in her bathroom and waited for hours until someone discovered her, getting her to ER. She too was quite determined and went through surgery, rehab, and back to her life. But the fall definitely took a huge bite out of her lifestyle.

There are hazards to be aware of such as failing eyesight, impaired balance, weakness or multiple medications that seniors and their caregivers should review.

The American Chiropractic Association also has a prevention checklist: Perform a home safety check removing loose rugs, and extra furniture, and providing night lights. Convert any slick tile or wood surfaces to carpet. Use regular exercise for strength, balance and flexibility like Tai Chi or water exercise. Review all medications with the doctor for side effects like dizziness or confusion and consider walking support. Have regular vision checkup and do tests for bone weakness to avoid fractures. Set up emergency care devices and do an ongoing monitoring of the need for more caregivers.

If falls do occur, or more safety advice and direction is needed the chiropractor can help.

Visit to the Chiropractor

The initial visit to the chiropractor begins with an initial spinal adjustment to evaluate spinal health. It is followed with a review of medical history, and a discussion on any fall or other injury that has happened. The chiropractor’s goal will be to help the patient regain activity without medication or surgery.

In the first visit, a along with a discussion of a fall, ways to prevent future falls will be explored. In subsequent visits the senior and his caretaker might also talk about new strength exercises and various ways to stay active.

I have seen this treatment help seniors come back from falls to regain strength and reclaim their lives. The family or other caregivers also learn ways to safeguard the senior’s world.

If you know a senior who might be at risk for falls, consider making an appointment with a chiropractor now.
