Work Out Rather Than Doze When Sitting for Long Hours

By Tom Herrin

Taking advantage of the opportunities people have available to them is one of the best ways for them to get in a workout.  While the more typical ways for most to get exercise may be to join an exercise class or jog or do something active at home, those who sit all day as they work often find themselves so tired from sitting that they fail to have the energy to get involved in some of those things.  A good thing about exercising while sitting in a chair is that they may be able to break the routine grind of their day as they get a little physical work in and generate greater mental alertness.  With good planning, it can do some really good things.

It May Help Strengthen the Arms

Without some kind of exercise, the arms tend to become weaker, and people may not notice until they find themselves straining to do some task that once seemed easy.  A little specific work can help to isolate the areas in need.  The arms can be strengthened while sitting only a few minutes of time.  This may be done by sitting up straight and grabbing the sides of the chair.  By pulling as if trying to lift the chair, the muscles can be tensed and held for around 10 seconds, then released.  Repeating this about five times can be a reasonably good workout.

It May Work the Hip

Sitting can often create an aching in the hips.  Lack of movement can take a toll on some parts of the body.  A good way to work the hips is to sit up straight and raise one foot slightly off of the floor while trying to keep the knee bent at a right angle.  Holding this position as long as possible can achieve the desired goal.  Switching to the other leg can complete the workout.  This may be able to work the hip muscles and get the blood flowing.

It May Be Easily Personalized

You can do whatever you want with exercising while sitting.  I have tried the previous activities with very good results.  I have also found that I can work any muscle I feel needs it by just deciding what kinds of ways can create tension.  You will be surprised at just how much you can do with these types of exercise.  They may be able to preserve, or even build, strength.
