A Bike Ride Can Get You Going
By Tom Herrin
Gulf cities have a lot of great things going for them. The scenery is great, the weather is usually warm, and it is just a generally fun atmosphere. I love that What-A-Burger that overlooks the gulf in Corpus. A trip there always makes me feel like getting out and doing something physical. Bike riding is one my favorite activities near the beach. It is an inexpensive activity and offers the rider flexibility in getting around just about anywhere. It also provides a workout that can be adjusted according to the riders' conditioning. If you are just starting out, you can have a short ride and still feel better. Then you can increase your ride as you get into better shape.
How’s The Cardio?
Riding a bicycle can allow you to work out as you progress in your fitness. It can be a great means of improving your cardiovascular system without a grueling workout. Start at a slow pace and enjoy the scenery. You don’t have to do a marathon ride. After you have been riding and build up to it, then you might want to consider some kind of organized ride. It can grow with your fitness and interest level.
What About Just Burning Calories?
A casual bike ride can burn about 50 percent more calories than a casual walk for the same length of time. When I really wanted to get serious about losing weight and improving my overall health, I began riding a bicycle. I had a busy schedule and had to ride at night. I would often get on my bike at 9 or 10 at night and ride for about an hour. If I did this four times per week, I found that I was losing about a pound a week with only limited dieting. I felt like a different person.
What About Physical Wear On Your Body?
I started riding a bicycle because walking was causing too much discomfort on my feet when I walked much. Bike riding is much less stressful on knees, feet, etc. The trick is that you have to be comfortable in your ride. Find a comfortable seat. There are all kinds. Adjust the handlebars so that your riding position is one that fits you. Some people find that leaning forward too much is tiring. Others don’t like riding in what seems like a straight up position. Riding a bike is a lot like buying a pair of shoes, you get to decide what fits you best. So if you are looking for a fun way or working out while enjoying the Texas Gulf Coast, go to your bike store or discount store, or get out your old two-wheeler. You might discover -- or rediscover -- what you’ve been missing.
