How to Avoid Whiplash

By Sara Butler

This is the time of year when your chiropractor sees an increase in the cases of whiplash. It may be due to how short the days have become or bad weather, but regardless of the reason, more people are damaging their spine in auto accidents this time of the year. Whiplash is a serious injury that can result from a motor vehicle accident, and whiplash can cause a lot of pain while it takes its time healing. Here are some suggestions your chiropractor wants you to use in order to avoid auto accidents and keep your spine safe and healthy!

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissues of your spine, specifically the neck region. It can cause pain, sore muscles, muscle spasms and limited range of motion. The most significant thing about whiplash is that you may not be aware right away of just how much damage you’ve done. It can take hours or even days for you to feel the full extent of the damage, and take quite a long time to heal from it, too. That’s why your chiropractor always suggests that you get checked out after even a minor traffic accident so that any damage you may have done can be addressed immediately.

What You Can Do

Prevention of traffic accidents is key to prevention of whiplash. Some of the most common ways chiropractors see their patients injured in a car accident is by:

  • Making a dead stop – Many whiplash patients were rear ended after they had to come to an abrupt stop. Sometimes you just can’t help it: You must stop suddenly. However, most of the time people have been stopped for a while when they’re rear-ended by someone who simply wasn’t paying attention. That’s why it’ll be in your best interest to always keep an eye on the cars behind you in your mirrors when you’re stopping, and slowing to a stop gradually helps, too.
  • Traffic jams – If you could avoid traffic jams, you probably would be doing that already. But since you can’t, just make sure you’re keeping a good distance between you and the car in front of you. You also need to take weather conditions or night driving into consideration when navigating the roads!

Whiplash due to car accidents is serious, so take all the extra precautions you can when you’re out on the road!
