Coffee Consumption May Lead To Reduced Risk of MS

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a serious nervous system condition that affects millions of Americans each year. The disease causes muscle weakness, often times making it hard or even impossible for patients to walk or stand. Serious cases can lead to paralysis. While there is no known cure for MS at this time, a new study may have found a way to reduce your risk of developing this debilitating illness – and it comes in caffeine form.

In the study, researchers discovered that Americans who drank at least four cups of coffee per day were around one-third less likely to develop to MS when compared with peers who do not drink coffee. The researchers also found that Swedes who drink at least six cups a day were one-third less to get MS as well. If you do the math, the team found that people who do not drink coffee are 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with MS versus those who drink coffee regularly.

This is not the first time that coffee has been found to benefit its heavy users. Prior studies found that coffee drinkers were less likely to develop Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s – two other neurological conditions similar to MS. These studies led to the research team to question whether the same results would occur in the muscle disease. While the findings did not exactly explain why coffee protects against MS, there were some correlating clues between this study and the previous ones.

Cytokines are cell-signaling proteins within the body that promote inflammation and appears to play a role in the development of MS. In laboratory tests, these cytokines have shown to be suppressed by caffeine. In addition to these connections, coffee drinkers have also been shown to have a reduced risk of type-2 diabetes, stroke, and liver cancer. With all of the science behind what coffee can do for us, it is a surprise that Americans are not chugging the stuff. But coffee is not for everyone – it can lead to stomach troubles or anxiety in some people. Until there is definitive proof that coffee is a cure-all, stick to your current intake.

Keeping your joints and spine in good overall health is also an easy way that you can take preventative measures against any deterioration in your overall health. Regular visits to the chiropractor, with adjustments and corrections of subluxations, can allow you to lower your risk of infection and injury.
