Is Chiropractic Care in Houston Safe?

Several reports are floating around that claim to show that chiropractic care can be dangerous. It seems that the media has played a large part in exaggerating a few isolated instances. Over the years, however, chiropractic has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment, particularly for acute back pain.

Treatments given by professional chiropractors have also been beneficial in the treatment of neck pain and migraine headaches. Those with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia are also able to get some relief.

In some cases, however, there have been some incidents that were caused by chiropractic treatment. These have included problems such as nausea, a ringing noise in the ears, temporary dizziness, and tiredness afterwards. Some patients may experience pain. Only eight percent of patients indicated one of these problems. Generally, the problem was quickly solved afterwards.

A larger number of patients were reported to have experienced some type of problem after one of their three first visits. 13 percent of patients claimed to have had a more severe complication, but none of them needed any kind of intervention. When it comes to safety, there have been more studies about chiropractic care than any other kind of medical treatment. Only 15 percent of all medical interventions used today, surgery included, have any medical research performed to support them.

In some cases, there has been what is called a VBA stroke. In these situations, doctors have reported that the patients already had the risk factors before the treatment was ever given. No actual evidence of a causal relationship was ever found. In studies that looked at medical treatment and compared it to the benefits of chiropractic treatment, it was discovered that chiropractic treatment won the day. This was the case for arthritis sufferers and those with lower back pain, when the benefits were compared to surgical intervention, and headaches are being studied now.

Overall, treatment by a chiropractor is considered to be quite safe, even with neck pain. The important qualifier is that the chiropractor must be trained and licensed.
