Is Your Posture in Check? Find Out!
By Genevieve Cunningham
Good posture can go a long way. From the way that you look to others to your self-esteem to the way that you physically feel, good posture can seriously alter your personal health. But unless you have incredibly bad posture, how can you tell whether yours needs work? Take a look at these signs that your posture needs a check, followed by what you can do to improve yours.
Your Stomach Pooches Outward
Sometimes our stomachs pooch because we’ve just eaten a big meal or we’re carrying around a few extra pounds. But other times, the stomach may protrude forward due to poor posture. When we don’t stand up straight, it relaxes the ab muscles and curves the lower back. This causes the stomach to stick out, which can make us look bigger than we really are. Wondering about your posture? Just look down and evaluate.
Your Shoulders Are Rounded in Profile
Take a look at yourself in profile and pay special attention to your shoulders. Are they up and back? Are they tight against your ears? Are they rounded forward? If your shoulders appear rounded, your upper back may also appear slightly rounded. This is a classic sign of poor posture. If you notice this in the mirror, try pulling your shoulders back and see what happens to your posture as you do.
How Can I Improve Posture?
-
Exercise - A great way to improve posture is to strengthen your body. Do cardio, lift weights, and work on the abs. You can also search the internet for exercises that are specifically designed to improve posture. These will likely center around your back, stomach, and shoulders. Over time, they can be incredibly beneficial, so stick with them.

Chiropractic Care - Another great way to enhance your posture is to enhance the health of your spine through chiropractic care. Chiropractors help properly align the spine, which eliminates pain and makes standing up straight a bit easier. Continued care (and subsequent reduction in pain) may also help to build strength and stability in the spine, which allows for better posture and better health to boot.
