Benefits of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, or the use of essential oils through scent or massage, can benefit people in several different ways. While the oil should not be taken orally, it can be applied through lotion or diluted in a bath. It can also be used in humidifiers or specially-designed aromatherapy machines. When used right, the essential oils can help relieve a variety of ailments including anxiety, nausea, and pain.

The type of essential used will be determined by the desired result. If looking to relax and de-stress, lavender and eucalyptus oils are perfect. Several studies have been done on the health benefits of lavender, and it turns out that people who inhale the scent of this purple flower tend to immediately relax. If dealing with anxiety, try dropping five to six drops of one of these oils in a warm bath to soak those worries away. There are also rollers on the market that have a skin safe blend of oils that when placed on the wrist can aid in relief from stress.

The use of stronger scents such as lemon and peppermint have uplifting effects. Peppermint can make you more alert and can also help to alleviate nausea. Studies have shown that smelling or applying a hint of a citrus oil like orange or lemon before a test can help the test taker be more alert and focused. Try keeping a small bottle of lemon oil in your desk at work. Instead of that afternoon doughnut and coffee pick me up, try a whiff or two of the lemon instead.

Earthy oils like sandalwood and frankincense are excellent in helping to relieve minor aches and pains. Frankincense in particular is known to be an anti-inflammatory, and can also be a minor sedative. Sandalwood helps to aid the nervous system, and is therefore good for any spastic activity. Try using massage oils or lotions with these scents when working out those tough muscle aches or back spasms.

As with anything, people should always test the waters before jumping right in when it comes to essential oils. Remember to test a spot of skin before apply topically. And remember to never ingest the oil, so keep curious children safe by storing your essential oils in a high cabinet along with other prescription medicines. When used right, aromatherapy can be a great alternative to traditional medications for easing several maladies. Just remember to pay it safe, and always consult a doctor with questions.
