Why Some People Heal Faster

By Sara Butler

Everyone is special. People are different in many ways, including how fast they heal. Have you ever had an injury similar to someone else you know and it seems like they recovered from it faster than you did? Well, it’s not because that person has channeled Wolverine's incredible healing abilities. There are many factors that can influence how fast a person heals from something. Here’s what you need to know about why some people heal faster than others and how chiropractic care fits into that picture.

Pre-existing Issues

The body’s physical reaction to injury differs between people. Your age, muscle strength and tone, and conditions such as diabetes and obesity all play a factor. This is due to the fact that all of these things prevent the body from healing as it should.

As you get older, your body repairs more slowly than it did when you were younger. If you are in poor physical condition because you don’t exercise, then it can also be easier to sustain an injury in the first place, and then take longer to heal. People who suffer from diabetes or who are obese take longer to heal from injuries, too. If you suffer from any of these conditions or are older, then you already know that your healing time will differ from someone who doesn’t have these issues.

After You Get Injured

Another thing that influences how fast you heal from an injury is how it was treated in the immediate aftermath. Ice and rest should always be your first line of defense immediately after an injury occurs, but this isn’t something everyone does. Some people think, for example, that heat is the right way to treat an acute injury. But heat can end up doing even more damage to the tissues that have been injured and make healing time take longer.

If you don’t rest the affected area correctly that can make it take even longer for healing to take place. If you have a physically demanding job and push through the pain, you’re too aggressive with your physical therapy, or if you try to exercise too soon, then you run the risk of just prolonging the healing process.

The Chiropractic Connection

If you sustain an injury your chiropractor is an excellent resource. They can help you determine how to proceed to encourage healing of your injury and get you back in shape in no time. Plus, there’s the added benefit of being in proper alignment. When you remove interferences from your spine in the form of misalignments, then your body is able to function as it should, and that allows your body to heal more efficiently.
